The Ultimate House Packing List for a Stress-free Move

The day has finally come, and you're ready to move out of your old place. You've been putting off packing for weeks now because it seems like such a daunting task. Filled with equal parts excitement and annoyance, the goal is simple - get all your belongings from location A to location B without anything breaking. Straightforward as it sounds, shifting houses can stress even the most zen people out.

Embodying the ‘kiasu’ culture of Singapore, homeowners would’ve done their homework and prepared a moving house checklist. Now comes the hard part, packing and physically moving your furniture. This blog will give you tips on how to pack up your house with ease so that you can have a stress-free move.

How Do You Prepare Furniture for Moving

Assuming that it's a full move and all your furniture is going along with you, the first thing to do is to prepare to dismantle everything. Have a small kit of fastening elements and screwdrivers at the ready on packing day, or even start dismantling furniture that you won’t use, earlier in advance.

This saves you the time and hassle of having to keep track of multiple moving parts, allowing you to group things up individually for you or your movers to track. We’ll also be talking about how to dismantle and pack specific types of furniture, giving you some quick tips on the best way to make shifting as hassle-free as possible.

1. Sofa

Unfortunately, dismantling a sofa is rarely an option unless you count separating the pillows. The mainstay of your living room, the best way to go about moving a sofa would be to have a ton of bubble wrap handy. Start by packing the sofa cushions in the same cardboard box as your pillows and label that. Ensuingly, bubble wrap the whole sofa while paying careful attention to the legs and edges of the fixture.

These features are highly prone to contact while shifting and might sustain damage if not protected thoughtfully. For ease of handling, consider adding a layer of stretch wrap above the bubble wrap to sustain the integrity of the latter. Follow all these steps and you won’t worry about your sofa getting damaged during the moving process.

2. Dining table and chairs

Thankfully, dining tables and chairs across the board can be dismantled to a certain degree. With your trusty fastening kit handy, remove the legs and wrap them together in bubble wrap or stretch wrap. To aid reassembly, pack the legs with the respective main body and keep them as a unit while moving. A pro tip is to have sealable plastic bags at the ready to keep the screw, or nuts and bolts together so you don’t lose them.

For some people, the effort of dismantling each piece individually might be too exhausting and tedious, in which case you can apply the same packing rules as you did with the sofa.

3. Fragile Objects

The most nerve-wracking things to pack are fragile items like your television or mirrors that may be irreplaceably damaged. We recommend either storing it in a bulky cardboard box filled with styrofoam packing peanuts, to prevent it from banging about during the moving process.

Alternatively, multiple layers of bubble wrap mixed with stretch wrap could also do the trick in a pinch. If you do adopt this approach, be sure to secure these fragile items in place during transportation. Bubble wrap will prevent some knicks but will do very little against objects crashing into each other at cruising speed.

4. Plants

Common to most households nowadays is a plethora of flora. Homeowners shell out a lot of tender loving care for their plants and subjecting them to layers of plastic wrap might well be criminal in their books. The best way to relocate plants, in our opinion, is to hand-carry them while ensuring the ceramic portions are as shock-proof as possible.

Keep your plants away from the loading area of your transport vehicle, lest a rogue chair abruptly shifts and bumps against your beloved succulents.
